Getting to the Isle of Arran

The Ferry service operators are: CALEDONIAN MACBRAYNE. You can contact them for details of timetables or Reservations via our website or visiting or by telephoning 08705 650000 if telephoning in the UK. We have a daily ferry service of 5 sailings in the summer months with some extra ones at weekends and a slightly reduced service in winter. The ferry, the Caledonian Isles, is a very reliable boat in all weathers and she’ll get you to Arran if she possibly can! You are advised to make a reservation for the return journey if you are bringing you car across.

During the summer months you can also get a ferry which runs from Claonaig on the Kintyre Peninsular to Lochranza. It’s a long journey round and you will need a car but the scenery, if you have the time, is well worth it. Again details are available from Caledonian MacBrayne.

If you’re trying to find Claonaig on your map then find Tarbert (on Loch Fyne) first. Claonaig is about 6 miles south of Tarbert, near Skipness on the east coast of Kintyre and facing the north west coast of Arran.

You have to get to Ardrossan Harbour – this is where the ferry terminal is and once in Ardrossan Town this is well signposted. You must be there half an hour before the ferry sailing. Coming up from England there are various routes, one of which is to take the M6 North then A74(M) – Junction 8 – then the A71 via Stonehouse, Strathaven, Kilmarnock and Irvine. Then the A78 north to Ardrossan.

Telephone Glasgow Central (08457 484950) for enquiries and reservations. Once there you can get a train from Glasgow Central to Ardrossan Harbour – there is a train to connect with each ferry sailing. The journey time is approximately one hour.

Arran visitors can now reach us by flying in to a choice of two airports. Glasgow Airport and Prestwick Airport. Prestwick Airport is the nearest being only 12 miles from Ardrossan Harbour and visitors can visit the Ryanair website for more information for flights into Prestwick. Glasgow Airport is about 1 hour away by car.

Train from Glasgow Airport

A bus from the airport will take you to PAISLEY GILMOUR STREET train station. The bus journey takes about 10 minutes. From Paisley Gilmour Street Station you can pick up a train to ARDROSSAN HARBOUR. Make sure you book your ticket to Ardrossan Harbour as there are three similar stations – Ardrossan Town, Ardrossan South Beach and then Ardrossan Harbour. Only the ferry train goes on to this last station

Train from Prestwick Airport

You can get a train directly from Prestwick Airport via Kilwinning straight to Ardrossan Harbour. If you fly with Ryanair hang on to your airline reservation itinerary because you can obtain a 50% discount if you show this to the conductor on the train.

Car Hire

You can hire a car at both airports and the journey to the ferry terminal at Ardrossan takes approximately 1 hour from Glasgow and approximately 1 hour from Prestwick. You must remember beforehand to make your car reservation if you have hired a car.

Car hire is also available on the island and if you cannot find details of this on our local services link then please contact us for more information. By e-mail if possible.
